Summary

Picasso and the Environs: Collected articles. Edited by Mikhail Busev.

This collections of articles attempts to appraise the legacy of Picasso, to evaluate his role in 20-th century art from today's point of view. The art of the great master is considered here in a wide historical context. Picasso is shown in a complex of relationships with other painters (Albert Gleizes, Jean Metzinger, Juan Gris, Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carra, Gino Severini, Salvador Dali), theatre makers (Sergei Diaghilev, Leonide Massine, Jean Cocteau), writers (Guillaume Appollinaire, Gertrude Stein) and musicians (Igor Stravinsky) which reveals new, sometimes unexpected sides of his genius. This book's leitmotiv is the theme "Picasso and Russia", which arose as far back as the 1900s. The contributors analyse the interrelation between Picasso and the leading artists of the Russian avant-garde of the first third of the 20-th century: Mikhail La-rionov, Vladimir Tatlin, Natalia Goncharova, Kasimir Malevich, Liubov Popova, Olga Rozanova, Nadezhda Udaltsova, Aleksandra Ekster, Aleksei Grischenko, Mikhail Le-Dantiu. There is a discussion of various opinions of Picasso's art expressed by Russian critics, philosophers, religious thinkers and writers in the 1910s -1920s (Nicolai Berdyaev, Sergei Bulgakov, Ivan Aksyonov, Georgy Chulkov, Yakov Tugendkhold). Some little-studied aspects of the work of the Spanish artist such as the role of photography in his painting and drawing, the peculiarities of his plastic mentality with respect to applied art and his curtain designs for ballet performances, are explored.
